Words from the Cross

"Father forgive them"
You cried out in your pain.
It can not have been easy,
As you hung upon that cross,
To forgive the ones who hurt you.
Those who mocked, and those who killed.
Those who did despise you.
The ones for whom you came.

"My God you have abandoned me.
Your face has turned away."
For you who had been sinless,
This was the height of pain.
You gave away God's favour
And exchanged it for His wrath.
The separation meant for me,
You took upon yourself.

"The debt is paid" you finally cried,
So my debt is now no more.
Before my God, I have no blame.
You paid the price I owed.
Your work up there had now been done,
So you could breathe your last.
The way to paradise begins
In the pain that you endured.

And as you died that lowly death,
The veil was torn in two.
The holyplace is now exposed,
And I boldly enter in.
I stand before a holy God,
Yet need not fear His wrath.
The sacrifice you were for me
Means, now, I am His son.
